Best Druid Races in WoW Classic

Unlike other classes, only one faction for each race can become a Druid in World of Warcraft Classic. Alliance Druids can come from Night Elves, while Horde Druids can only come from Tauren.

Interestingly enough, each of the races provides more benefits for one of the different forms a Druid can take: the Night Elf's ability to Shadowmeld allows more uses for stealth, while Quickness increases your dodge chance which is great coupled in Cat Form.

On the other side, Tauren's Endurance allows Bear Form to tank a bit better with increased health, while War Stomp acts as an extra form of crowd control.

Intro to Leveling as a Druid in WoW Classic

advertisement

Whether you're new to the game, have only played during the expansions since Cataclysm, or are returning to WoW Classic after a long time away, there are many things you should know before getting into the optimal paths for leveling from 1 to 60.

The most important thing to remember is that many quality of life changes and streamlined leveling systems are not in place in WoW Classic - quests aren't always thrown in your face, and fighting against mobs may not be as easy and quick.

As a hybrid class, Druids have a fairly easier time leveling compared to most classes. With the ability to heal, tank, and stealth, there's little to stop Druids from achieving their goals unless you get too cocky. They also benefit from an improved speed buff from their cat form that makes questing all the more faster and easier.

Unlike a lot of other classes, Druids are fairly self-sustainable and don't rely as heavily on gear as classes like Warriors and Rogues, so even if you find yourself in a gear drought, it's unlikely to affect the rate at which you level. However, since they are defined as hybrids, there's always another class that can do one of their jobs better - Warriors can hold aggro and survive a lot easier, while Rogues can easily out-damage Druids, and their heals and especially resurrection ability is severely limited.

Classic WoW Druid Leveling Tips

Below you'll find a few general tips to keep in mind when trying to level as a Druid

  • Balance-talent Druids have uses - but are generally considered bad for focusing on when leveling after getting Omen of Clarity.
  • Get Feline Swiftness as soon as you can, it's by far the most important leveling talent.
  • With Entangling Roots at 8, you can turtle up and outlast pretty much any yellow or orange mob if you need mana. It's not fast but it's better than dying in a pinch.
  • Your mana can regenerate while you're shapeshifted, which has many implications. Usually you want to fight something entirely in shapeshift form, perhaps after pulling with Moonfire, and then use your entirely full mana bar to heal up after a fight.
  • Regrowth is an extremely powerful in-combat heal, but it costs massive mana. If your mana will regenerate in form afterwards, it can be a great spell.
  • There isn't much use for wrath, Starfire, and some other spells after you have your combat shapeshifts. Consider not training them past 10 to save money.
  • Although Maul's tooltip doesn't mention it, it generates immense threat. Because of this, the AoE value of swipe, and the fact that you're probably picking up some bear talents in feral, you are an excellent tank while leveling.
  • You can tank or heal or cat DPS satisfactorily in dungeons as any spec while leveling. When it comes to high level dungeons, equipment matters more for these things than spec, so keep sets for any roles you want to play after like 40.
  • Almost every stat is relevant for you if you're feral, not as much Spirit.
  • Your weapon damage and speed has 0 impact on bear and cat form. In forms, weapons are stat sticks ONLY.
  • Druids are unique in that they have the ability to teleport to a special Druid-only city called Moonglade. You can consider this a second Hearthstone, and use it to move back for buying spells and repairing, while keeping your Hearthstone set to whatever hub your closest to while questing.

Best Classic WoW Druid Talents for Leveling

Most druids generally consider specializing in the Feral Combat Tree to be the easiest and most surefire way to level, with a bit of leftover talents placed in Balance or Restoration based off your preference and leveling style.

  • Balance - 14
  • Feral Combat - 32
  • Restoration - 5

The purpose of this build is to maximize your ability to take on enemies on your own, first by tanking in bear form, and eventually using cat form, while dipping slightly into Balance for the ability to clearcast. However, since your first ten levels do not grant you a shapeshift form, you'll need to survive by hitting targets from afar with Wrath and using melee attacks until they fall.

  • Your first 5 points should take advantage of your new form by going into Ferocity in the Feral Combat tree to reduce rage needed for attacks (and later energy)
  • The next row of talents are more geared towards PvP and tanking, so unless you plan on constantly being in a group or engaging in world PvP, it's better to skip the row by putting 5 points in Feral Aggression instead, as it will help you level as bear a bit quicker with increased damage.
  • With the 10 points above, you can skip down to the third row and start on the fourth row, putting 2 points in Feline Swiftness first if you value leveling (and moving) as fast as possible, then either Feral Charge or 3 points in Sharpened Claws for increasing critical strike chance. Even if you won't be using Bear form to level as much, the charge is still incredibly useful in many situations.
  • Head to the next tier to put 3 points into Predatory Strikes for a huge boost to melee damage, and then 2 points in Blood Frenzy to more combo point generation.
  • Skip the shred talent for a moment, and instead get Faeire Fire (Feral) to use on every target you encounter from here on out - it's that important. With that done, you can dip back to put 2 points in Savage Fury to further your damage, and then back to Improved Shred.
  • Finish up the Feral Combat tree by putting all five points into Heart of the Wild for a major boost for all forms, and then a point in Leader of the Pack - even if you aren't grouping, the increased critical chance in beast forms is well worth it.
  • Now it's time to go into the Balance Tree for a bit. Start with Nature's Grasp and then go right into Improved Nature's Grasp to help give you slight crowd controlling options to get out of danger when needed.
  • Go for the 5 points in Natural Weapons as a nice boost for your damage output, and then dip into Omen of Clarity, as its power to give you a free move shouldn't be overlooked.
  • With your remaining points, you'll probably want to put the last Balance points in Natural Shapeshifting, and 5 points in Furor - but these last points are largely up to you.

Classic Druid Skills and Spells to Buy When Leveling (Rotations)

advertisement

With your talent trees mapped out, you'll still need to reach the levels need to unlock them. In the meantime, knowing which skills and spells to pay for and unlock can save you time - and more importantly money

As a general rule of thumb, any skills and spells that become available between level 1 and 10 are worth picking up, if for no other reason than they won't put a big dent in your wealth accumulation by this point. This includes Mark of the Wild (Level 1 and 2), Healing Touch (Level 1 and 2), Wrath (Level 1 and 2), Moonfire, Rejuvenation (Level 1 and 2), Thorns, and Entangling Roots.

  • As a general rule of thumb, you should always be buying upgrades of Mark of the Wild at level 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60.
  • The sames goes for Thorns at level 6, 14, 24, 34, 44, and 54.
  • Since you'll be using healing spells to keep yourself going between pulls, it's also worth investing in Healing Touch at level 8, 14, 20, 26, 32, 38, 44, 50, 56, and 60
  • Rejuvenation at Level 10, 16, 22, 28, 34, 40, 46, 52, 58, and 60
  • Regrowth at Level 10, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, and 60
  • You won't be using many balance spells after gaining beast forms, so ignore any other Wrath, Moonfire, and Starfire. You can also ignore buying regular Faeire Fire until you get the feral version at level 30, 42, and 54.
  • You should be investing in Bear moves at least until you get Cat (and further if you plan to group or tank in dungeons) with moves like Maul at level 10, 18, and possibly even level 26.
  • Demoralizing Roar at level 10, and 20
  • On principle, you should be getting every Cat skill available, including Claw at level 20, 28, 38, 48, and 58
  • Ferocious Bite at level 32, 40, 48, 56, and 60.
  • Druids have a couple of odd utility spells you can avoid until later, like Cower, Tranquility, and Soothe Animal.
  • However, moves like Travel Form, Dash, and Tiger's Fury should be gotten immediately.
  • Aquatic Form can have its uses - though it is very situational, so consider saving it for later if you'd rather focus on getting your mount money.

In the early levels, you'll have to begin by using Wrath and Moonfire, while buffing yourself with Rejuvenation before going into melee, and then after level ten swapping into Bear Form. Be sure you have Mark of the Wild and Thorn on at all times. As you obtain more abilities, you can begin using moves like Enrage or Demoralizing Roar if going against multiple targets, and keep using Maul whenever possible.

Once you get Cat Form, you may still want to use Bear Form until you get a better finisher than Rip, but its up to you. Ideally you'll want to start with Shred and then use Claw to generate combo points (or at least one Rake first), and then alter Ferocious Bite as a finisher. Once you get Faeire Fire (Feral), you'll want that on at all times.

If you find yourself grouping more often than not, you can still end up prioritizing Bear Form to take on more enemies at once, healing yourself before swapping into Bear Form, and using Faeire Fire and Demoralizing Roar before using Maul - or Swipe if fighting 3+ enemies at once.

Best Weapons, Gear, and Stats for Classic WoW Druids

advertisement

Finding ways to improve yourself is always tough in a game like World of Warcraft, due to the nature of random drops. That said, there are certain things you should look out for, and a few items you should make sure to try to obtain along the way to make sure your Druid is always at their best.

Unlike Warriors and Rogues, Druids do not need to worry about keeping their weapons up to date on being as powerful as possible - as Druids benefit from the stats, not the ratings. You'll want to prioritize a 3-way tie between Strength and Agility to increase your damage and crit, followed by Stamina, Intellect, and Spirit - though you can focus more on Spirit gear is you truly wish to trade damage for regeneration outside combat.

Because you don't need to necessarily worry about weapons, you should always keep an eye out for items with goods stats - regardless of where they may come from. Check the Auction Houses, look for quest rewards for gear with additional stats you're looking for.

Some gear to look for can include:

Best Druid Leveling Gear

  • Tunic of Westfall - The Defias Brotherhood Dungeon Quest in The Deadmines (Alliance)
  • Dry Moss Tunic - Betrayal from Within Quest in The Barrens (Horde)
  • Panther Armor - The Den Quest in Stonetalon Mountains (Horde)
  • Triprunner Dungarees - The Grand Betrayal Dungeon Quest in Gnomergan (Alliance)
  • Raptor Hunter Tunic- Raptor Mastery Quest in Stranglethorn Vale
  • Wolfshead Helm - Leatherworking
  • Masons Fraternity Ring - Divino-matic Rod Dungeon Quest in Zul'Farrak
  • Stormshroud Armor - Leatherworking
  • Devilsaur Gauntlets and Leggings - Leatherworking

Classic WoW Druid Quests

advertisement

Druid Class Quests are largely essential (barring a few) that should be considered either extremely important or at least worth your time, depending on how quickly you want to level.

Level 10 Bear Form Quest

Horde Druids will start their quest in Thunder Bluff, and quickly learn the ability to teleport to Moonglade, a special town just for Druids (this spell can also be used as second hearthstone to make certain instances of quick travel much quicker and efficient. Once at Moonglade, you'll take on a quest to speak to the Great Bear Spirit outside of Nighthaven, and then return to Thunder Bluff.

You'll get a Cenarion Lunar Dust, and be told to go to the border of the Barrens and Mulgore to summon a Lunaclaw, which will attack you. Defeat it, then return to Thunder Bluff to gain the Bear Form.

Alliance Druids will have a fairly similar quest - sending them from Darnassus to Moonglade to meet the Great Spirit Bear and back again. For this quest however, you'll be told to take the Cenarion Moondust to Darkshore and use it at the Moonkin Stone near central Darkshore. Be sure you're clear of Moonkins before summoning the Lunaclaw to defeat it, and then return to Darnassus to get Bear Form.

Level 14 Cure Poison Quest

Despite getting Abolish Poison later, Cure Poison is a worthwhile spell to invest in, so you may want to check it out, though the time it takes can vary. Ideally, you'll want to already have 5 Earthroot from Herbalism or found in the Auction House.

advertisement

Horde Druids should get the Lessens Anew quest and head to Moonglade, where you'll get a Empty Dreadmist Peak Sampler. You'll need to scale Dreadmist Peak in The Barrens and fill the sampler with poison water at the top - the mountain is up to the Northwest of the Crossroads (and you'll be ambushed trying to sample the water).

For the second part, you'll need to get a new quest requiring 5 Earthroot and 5 Kodo Horns. Hopefully you have the Earthroot now, and as for the Kodo Horns, you'll need to find them wandering the northern plains of the Barrens. Finally, you'll use the Curative Animal Salve to cure 10 Sickly Gazelle found wandering all over the Barrens. Do this, and you'll get to hand in some favors at Moonglade and back at Thunder Bluff to get the spell.

As for Alliance Druids, you'll generally have the same task in different locations. The Sampler you obtain must be used at the Cliffspring Falls in Darkshore at the base of the big river on the north side of Darkshore. Like the Horde version, you'll be ambushed while getting the sample.

Along with gathering 5 Earthroot for the second part, you'll also need Lunar Fungus, which is contained in Lunar Fungal Bloom found between Auberdine and Ameth Aran. Finally, you'll use the Curative Animal Salve on 10 Sickly Deer critters wandering Darkshore, and then return to the quest givers to get your reward.

Level 16 Aquatic Form Quest

While you won't see much use out of it early on, there's no denying that some later quests will involve navigating large bodies of water, and having the aquatic form to swim faster and breathe underwater can come in handy- but it is a questline that involves a lot of traveling so you may wish to avoid until later.

Horde Druids can start in Moonglade to take on Trial of the Lake, sending you to find a Shrine Bauble in the middle of the lake in one of the urns, but you'll need to return in 5 minutes. Next, you'll need to combine two pendants: The Half Pendant of Aquatic Agility in the Barrens, and the Half Pendant of Aquatic Endurance in Silverpine Forest.

The first pendants is located in the Sludge Fens at the top east of the map, and you'll need to brave the sludge to find a submerged box in the middle of the water. The second pendant is located all the way off the coast of Silverpine Forest, nortthwest of Sepulcher. It's quite a swim, but luckily the box is by a fissure that will give you air back. With both pendants, you can return to Moonglade and get your Aquatic Form.

advertisement

For Alliance Druids, you'll have the same test with different locations. The first part is largely the same, requiring you to go to Moonglade to find the Shrine Bauble in the middle of the lake.

Next you'll need to find the Half Pendant of Aquatic Agility in Darkshore, which is far north in the water among some islands north of where the river empties out, past the large turtle skeleton. As for the other Half Pendant of Aquatic Endurance, you'll need to travel all the way to Westfall, and swim far off the northwestern coast past the small island off the Gold Coat Quarry. Like in Silverpine, you'll find the box next to a fissure to get some air back, and you can then return to Moonglade to get your Aquatic Form.

Leveling Classic WoW Druids in Groups and Dungeons

Druids enjoy the ability to fulfill multiple roles due to their hybrid nature - so be sure to discuss with your group when leveling which particular role you should best fill.

If you need to act as a tank, you should be in Bear Form almost all the time, only popping out to heal and use Rejuvenation before pulling, and then maximizing damage by ensnaring targets with Demoralizing Roar and then Mauling, and only using Swipe to take on multiple targets and hopefully hold aggro - though it should be noted they can have a tougher time holding aggro than any Warrior. Still, Bash and Feral Charge can help in these areas.

Sometimes, especially in later levels, it can be better to take on a supportive role by using Leader of the Pack, Thorns, Mark of the Wild, and Faerie Fire to keep damage on all fronts up, and staying in regular form to heal and use Moonfire to pull when needed.

At endgame dungeons and raiding, Restoration Druids can become invaluable - even if their heals aren't as great as a Priest. They have the benefit of keeping units topped off with healing over time, as well as instant heals for snap judgements on a tank or other character that suffers a critical hit. They can also use abilities like Innervate to help out casters, and Rebirth for a pinch resurrection when it's most needed.

Best Professions for WoW Classic Druids

Druids have a lot of choices for which Professions they'd like to focus on in Classic WoW, and can lean heavily on what you're looking to get out of Professions.

For those looking to make money, Skinning plus Herbalism or Mining is an easy way to maximize profits - since you'll be killing at close range, skinning will come naturally. Druids also have the ability to stealth past hostile areas to reach rare plants or mining nodes that would take other classes longer to reach.

As for Professions that craft items, Engineering is largely considered a must-have for Druids looking to maximize their offense both in PvP or PvE. In particular, crafting Dynamite can help increase your damage output even more, and Iron Grenades can stun targets like pesky ranged Classes in PvP..

Each of the Engineering paths has its own perks - Gnomish Engineering includes the Gnomish Battle Chicken that can help out in combat as a pet that also has the chance to increase your melee attack speed. On the other hand, Goblin Engineering can net you the Goblin Rocket Helm, which is crucial for closing the distance on enemies in PvP trying to kite you around.

Leatherworking can also be considered if you either plan to boost your income from Skinning by crafting items to sell, or if you really want to get into crafting your own armor, as stats are more important to a Druid than blacksmithing powerful weapons.
